Turning an idea into a project

What is a project? Based on  which criteria an idea is realized within the project management framework?

What is a project?

DIN

  • Endeavor that is identified by the singular occurrence of a specific combination of terms and conditions, such as: project objectives; limitations from time, finances or personal issues; demarcation from other endeavors; project specific organization

PMI (Project Management Institute)

  • „A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.“ (PMBoK® Guide, S. 5)

What is a project? Decision Tree

  • Not all demands and requests raised in an organization need to be executed using project management
  • A project decision tree may help to decide whether a request is important enough for an organization to be executed as a project
  • The project decision tree needs to be customized to the specifics of an organization

Following criteria may used as a guidance to decide whether an demand/request is defined as a project:

  • When estimated costs exceed €XY, the demand is defined as a project and required to follow project management methodology.
  • If costs cannot be estimated yet, or the estimation does not exceed €XY, the demand is defined as a project, if three of the criteria in the decision tree can be answered with yes – uniqueness, involved parties, time limit, visibility, predefined work packages, (standardized approval processes, change management, etc.)
