Role of the Program Manager

The ideal program manager…

  • Is a diplomat while dealing with many, partly difficult key players.

  • Creates a vision for the program as a whole and reviews the organizational impact.

  • Identifies and deals with project interdependencies.

  • Schedules & prioritizes individual projects in the program.

  • Shows consultant skills.

  • Has foresight and understands risks while keeping the overview of all projects.

  • is an expert in project or even program management.

  • Finds a balance between overview and knowledge about the work in the different projects e.g. by finding a contact person in every project.

  • Provides support, decision making capacity and capability as well as program perspective for the project managers.

  • Is respected and has a good standing.
  • Can break the rules if needed for the program.

  • Is communicative and a good listener.

  • Has the ability to simplify complex issues and uses a simple language.

Role of the Program Management Office

Definition: A pool of e.g. project managers, schedulers, contact managers, risk managers, sales representatives, systems engineers, designers and developers, system integrators, service engineers, or consultants.

Main function: Provide centralized monitoring and support for all projects as well as overseeing and liaising with the project offices.
